ULD

Aluminum, blower unit, insulation, lamps, electronics
61” x 79” x 64”

2005

Sitting in a darkened space and hotly lit with spots from above, ULD is ominous and yet strangely familiar. Made from a highly modified ‘Unit Load Device’ the container is of a standard series of dimensions

Designed to fit into the cargo bay of a Boeing 747 commercial jet. The average civilian will never be able to get close to one of these enclosures as they are typically only found in the highly secured spaces adjacent to jets on the tarmac.

Walking closer to the piece it begins to swell and balloon outward an inch or two in all directions. Creaking and groaning like a sinking submarine in a movie, it does not feel particularly safe to be near it. Just as quickly as it finishes inhaling an unseen valve opens and the aluminum enclosure returns to its proper shape. The cycle repeats on a slow breathing rhythm.

On the front of the container there is a viewing port revealing an intensely lit interior. Peering inside in all directions will not help you understand what is going on. The antiseptically clean interior appears utterly vacant with no sign of the cause for this strange occurrence.
